Shaw backs Mainoo for Man Utd player of the match in Ipswich win
Left‑back Luke Shaw praised Kobbie Mainoo’s midfield display, saying the teenager deserved the man‑of‑the‑match award after United’s 5‑2 comeback win over Ipswich.

Luke Shaw said Kobbie Mainoo deserved the player‑of‑the‑match award after Manchester United’s 5‑2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford. The left‑back described the 19‑year‑old’s control of the game and his ability to drive the team forward as “world class”. Shaw’s remarks came despite captain Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat‑trick and providing an assist in the comeback.
Ipswich took the initiative early, with Leif Davis opening the scoring after an Abdul Fatawu cross. United struggled initially but found a new gear once they equalised, eventually overturning the deficit and scoring five times. Manager Michael Carrick oversaw the turnaround, which helped erase the sting of the opening defeat to Hull City last weekend.
Shaw also took personal responsibility for conceding the first goal, saying he was disappointed with his own performance. He highlighted Mainoo’s return to the starting XI as a sign of his growing leadership, even as new signing Carlos Baleba prepares to challenge for midfield minutes. United next travel to Everton on 6 September, aiming to build on the three points secured at Old Trafford.
