Honest Ahanor to join Chelsea after Crystal Palace loan
Chelsea have secured teenage defender Honest Ahanor on a deal worth up to £40m, with the 18‑year‑old set to complete a season‑long loan at Crystal Palace before moving to Stamford Bridge next summer.

Chelsea have agreed a deal worth up to £40m for teenage defender Honest Ahanor, who will join the Blues next season after finishing a loan spell at Crystal Palace. The 18‑year‑old Italy international will remain with the south‑London club for the remainder of the 2026‑27 campaign before becoming a Chelsea player in the summer of 2027.
Ahanor arrived at Atalanta from Genoa on a three‑year contract last summer for a reported €16m plus €4m in add‑ons. He made 28 Serie A appearances last term, establishing himself as a regular left‑back, and earned his Champions League debut in a 2‑1 victory over Club Brugge. In May he received his first senior Italy call‑up for friendlies against Luxembourg and Greece, underscoring his rapid rise.
The loan to Crystal Palace follows a common arrangement where a player temporarily moves to another club while the parent club retains registration rights. Under typical terms, the loanee club covers the player’s wages and may negotiate a loan fee; the player returns to the owning side at the end of the agreed period unless an option or obligation to buy is triggered, which is not the case here. Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea have been active in the market, adding England midfielder Morgan Rogers for a club‑record £117m and bringing in veterans Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson to bolster experience. Chelsea agree deals for Mudryk, Adarabioyo and Sanchez.
The move also coincides with the departure of striker Marc Guiu to RB Leipzig for £14.6m, highlighting the club’s strategy of balancing youthful acquisitions with seasoned professionals as they shape the squad for the coming seasons.
