Players With the Most Assists in Football History
Lionel Messi leads the all-time assist charts with around 414. Here is the full list, plus why the numbers differ so much between sources.

Lionel Messi holds the record for the most assists in football history with approximately 414 career assists across all competitions for Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami and Argentina.
That is the headline. The complication — and it is a significant one — is that assist totals are the least reliable major statistic in football, and any list you read will disagree with any other list you read.
The all-time assist leaders
| Rank | Player | Assists (approx.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lionel Messi | 414 | Barcelona, PSG, Inter Miami, Argentina |
| 2 | Ferenc Puskás | 404 | Figure estimated from historical records |
| 3 | Pelé | 369 | Santos, New York Cosmos, Brazil |
| 4 | Johan Cruyff | 322 | Ajax, Barcelona, Netherlands |
| 5 | Luis Suárez | 293 | Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona, Atlético, Uruguay |
| 6 | Cristiano Ronaldo | 287 | Man Utd, Real Madrid, Juventus, Al Nassr, Portugal |
Figures are approximate and vary between sources — see below for why.
Why the numbers are unreliable
Three separate problems compound each other.
Assists were not officially recorded for most of football history. Puskás played between the 1940s and 1960s. There was no assist column. His figure of 404 is estimated from historical records, reconstructed retrospectively from match reports and archives of varying quality. The same applies to Pelé and, to a lesser extent, Cruyff.
Definitions differ between providers. Some count a pass as an assist only if it directly precedes the goal with no intervening touch. Others allow a defensive deflection in between. Some award assists on won penalties; others do not. Opta, FIFA, national federations and club archives all apply slightly different rules, and a 5% definitional difference across a 700-game career is dozens of assists.
Competition scope varies. Whether pre-season friendlies, testimonials and non-competitive international fixtures count changes totals meaningfully — particularly for players from eras where such fixtures were far more common.
The practical consequence: treat these figures as ranked estimates, not as exact counts. Messi being first is robust across essentially every source. Whether the number is 414 or 390 is not.
What actually makes a great assist provider
Two profiles dominate the top of these lists, and they are quite different players.
The creator. Messi, Cruyff. Players whose primary function is to generate chances for others, operating between the lines with the ball at their feet. Their assist totals reflect their job description.
The finisher who also creates. Ronaldo, Suárez. Players whose main output is goals but whose assist volume accumulates because they are permanently in dangerous areas and are willing to pass. Suárez in particular pairs 293 assists with ruthless finishing — a rare combination.
Puskás and Pelé sit somewhere between, from an era where positional roles were looser and forwards routinely dropped deep to build attacks.
Premier League specifics
The all-time Premier League assist record is a separate and much more reliable list, because the competition has recorded assists consistently since its formation in 1992. Ryan Giggs sits at the top of that particular table, with Cesc Fàbregas and Wayne Rooney among the leading names behind him.
If you want a genuinely trustworthy assist statistic, Premier League-era numbers are the ones to use. Cross-era global totals are useful for argument, not for precision.
