The Premier League Assist Record: Every All-Time Leader
Ryan Giggs holds the Premier League assist record with 162. The all-time top ten, the per-game table that ranks them differently, and every assist record.

Ryan Giggs holds the Premier League assist record with 162, set across 632 appearances for Manchester United between 1992-93 and 2012-13. Kevin De Bruyne is second on 119. Nobody else has passed 111.
The gap is the story. Giggs finished 43 clear of the man in second, and the way he got there is no longer a career shape that modern football produces.

Why 162 is probably safe forever
Do the arithmetic and the record starts to look less like a total and more like a wall.
Giggs needed 632 matches. That is twenty-one consecutive Premier League seasons at one club, averaging thirty appearances a year, without a career-altering injury and without a single transfer that took him out of the division. Every element of that has become rarer.
Salah, the highest-placed active player, sits on 94 after 328 games. At his own rate — a very good 0.29 per game — he would need another 235 matches to reach Giggs. That is six more full seasons, starting from a point where he is already deep into his thirties.
De Bruyne came closest, and he is the instructive case. He created at a rate nobody in Premier League history has matched over a meaningful sample, and he still finished 43 short, because injuries and a career that began in Germany cost him the volume. Elite rate was not enough. Only elite rate plus two decades in the same league gets you there.
The per-game table tells a different story
Ranking by raw totals rewards longevity. Ranking by assists per game rewards the thing people actually mean when they argue about creators.
De Bruyne’s 0.41 is the highest figure in the top ten by a distance — he created roughly 60% more per match than Giggs did. Fàbregas at 0.32 is next. Then a cluster around 0.30: Bergkamp, Silva, Salah.
At the other end, Milner’s 0.14 across 658 games and Lampard’s 0.17 across 609 are the clearest illustration of what the raw list measures. Both are on it because they played an enormous amount of football at a good standard for a long time. That is a genuine achievement. It is a different achievement from De Bruyne’s.
If you want the honest answer to “who was the best assist provider in Premier League history”, the totals table does not give it to you. The per-game column gets closer.
The single-season record: 21
Bruno Fernandes holds the record for most Premier League assists in a season with 21, set for Manchester United in 2025-26.
Before that the mark had stood at 20, shared for over two decades. Thierry Henry’s 2002-03 remains the more remarkable individual season on the list, because he paired his 20 assists with 24 goals — still the only 20/20 campaign in Premier League history.
The rest of the assist record book
Quickest to 50 assists: Kevin De Bruyne, in 123 matches.
Most consecutive matches with an assist: seven, by Mesut Özil for Arsenal between 26 September and 21 November 2015.
Most assists from one player to another: 24, achieved twice — Frank Lampard to Didier Drogba, and Harry Kane to Son Heung-min.
Most combined goals and assists between two players: 47, Kane and Son. Their 2020-21 season produced 14 of them, itself a record.
Most assists in a single match: four, managed by nine players. Kane’s four against Southampton in September 2020 is the only instance where all four went to the same team-mate — Son, who scored all four.
Why Premier League assist numbers can be trusted
This matters more than it sounds. The Premier League has recorded assists consistently since 1992, using one definition, applied by one set of officials, across every match. That is unusual.
Global career assist totals do not have any of that. Assists were not formally recorded for most of football’s history, providers disagree on what counts, and figures for players from earlier eras are reconstructed from match archives of varying quality — which is why the all-time assist lists in world football vary by dozens between sources.
When someone quotes you a Premier League assist figure, it is a count. When someone quotes you a career figure spanning multiple continents and five decades, it is an estimate wearing the clothes of a count.
